Custom Lighting Design in New Jersey
Shakúff is a hand-blown glass lighting studio in Industry City, Brooklyn — a short drive from most of northern New Jersey, and close enough that clients come over to see the glass before they commit to anything.
We have made two bespoke fixtures for New Jersey houses: a canopy-free Kadur Drizzle under the vaulted ceilings of a Lakewood home, and the first oval three-tiered fixture we ever built, for a dining room in West Orange.
Working with the team you already have
New Jersey work tends to reach us mid-renovation, from a homeowner who already has a general contractor and an electrician they trust. That suits the way we work, because we do not install — anywhere. We draw the fixture, build it in Brooklyn, and send it out with detailed instructions for the team already on site.
The Lakewood house was exactly that brief. The clients had a contractor and an electrician they loved, and our job was to fit in around them rather than ask them to start again. If you want to see the glass first, the studio and showroom are the same building, and most of our designs are on display there.

New Jersey projects
Two houses, nine years apart, that wanted opposite things from a ceiling.
Tress Residence
Vaulted ceilings, dark marbled floors and mirrored doors, every surface already competing for attention. We drew a Kadur Drizzle in a custom eight-inch orb and hung it on monopoint grippers with no canopy at all, so it reads as points of light catching the room rather than a fitting bolted to the ceiling.

Dining Room — West Orange
The first oval, three-tiered fixture we ever made. Fifty Crystal Shell pendants on a rounded chrome canopy, composed to sit over the table without crowding it. Sleek and restrained, which is what this house asked for.

Do you work in New Jersey?
Yes, though less often than across the river — two completed New Jersey houses so far, in Lakewood and West Orange, against seventeen projects in New York and six in South Florida. Being a short drive away, New Jersey clients are the ones most likely to come and watch the glass being made.
We already have a contractor and an electrician. Can you work with them?
That is the normal arrangement, and the one we prefer. We do not install ourselves anywhere. Every fixture ships with detailed installation instructions and we work directly with whoever is on site. The Lakewood clients had a contractor and electrician they already trusted; our job was to make their part straightforward.
Can you make a fixture with no visible canopy?
Yes. In Lakewood we used a custom eight-inch Kadur Drizzle orb on monopoint grippers and eliminated the canopy altogether, which is what made the ‘classic meets contemporary’ brief work in a room full of marble and mirror. Monopoint grippers also let each pendant hang at its own height, so the shape of the fixture follows the shape of the room.
Can we come and see the glass?
Please do — it is the shortest trip any of our out-of-state clients make. The showroom is in the same Industry City building as the studio, open Monday to Thursday 9am–5:30pm, Friday 9am–4pm and Sunday by appointment, with most of our designs on display. We also partner with showrooms across the United States, and can send samples; those are charged, and the cost is reversed if you return them in good condition.
How long does a custom fixture take?
Typically 10–14 weeks for a custom project and 10–12 weeks for a fixture from our catalogue, counted from when the invoice is paid. Orders can sometimes be expedited for an additional fee, at our production manager’s discretion. Drawings come before any of that, and they are free of charge.
Do you work with interior designers and architects?
Regularly, and across the tri-state area we have worked with Woods Bagot, Gensler, JDK Interiors, Karen Asprea Studio, Designs by Debbie and Nicky Kahn among others. We offer a 10% trade discount for designers, and provide spec sheets and customised drawings on request.
Are the fixtures UL approved?
Yes. All our fixtures are UL approved, use LED exclusively, are dimmable, and run on 120V in the US.
Across the river, and further
New Jersey sits between the two areas we have worked in most. There are seventeen projects across New York, two more in Connecticut and six in South Florida, alongside work in Las Vegas, Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, Truckee, Montreal, El Salvador and Tel Aviv.
